If you are new to Kleinburg or have not been a part of this in the past, please consider volunteering this year!  It is a wonderful experience for both young and old.  It brings our community together and forges bonds between neighbours. There is a very special spirit of cooperation and celebration that is embodied in this festival:  “a community brought together with a common goal”.

For more info on the festival, visit www.bindertwine.ca or check us out on Facebook and twitter.
It will take hundreds of volunteers, both adults and students, to put on this Festival. Volunteer shifts can be as short as 2 hours so you don’t have to give up your entire festival day.
Adults– this is a chance to meet your neighbours and have a fun and exciting day while helping showcase your community.  Students– you will earn Community Service/Volunteer Hour credits for your participation.

Volunteer areas: Thurs & Fri aft/evening set-up, festival areas on Saturday (Admission Gates, Bacon on a Bun booths, Kleinburger booth, Sarsaparilla booth, Children's Area, Olde Tyme Activity Area, Parking/Traffic control) and Sunday morning cleanup.

For more info and to book your shift, contact the volunteer co-ordinator at bindertwine.volunteers@gmail.com.

Local Infrastructure Repairs

Local activist, Richard Lorello, and business owner Frank Greco, have been petitioning the city to repair some of the broken infrastructure around the village.  Here are some of the items under consideration.
  • There is a damaged streetlight pole that was identified  - Staff will followup.
  • Hardsurfaces, such as roads, curbs, sidewalks, and interlocking brick, are being repaired to meet City standards.
  •
  • Bollards and benches along Islington Avenue are scheduled to be painted by the end of June. Damaged bollards will be repaired or replaced. All park benches were refurbished over the winter months
  •
  • The city’s annual pavement marking program for the Kleinburg area is scheduled for completion in July to make cross-walks and intersections more conspicuous and visible for citizens and visitors.
  •
  • The city will work with PowerStream and the local Councillor to develop a plan to resolve the maintenance concerns of the hydro hut and utility box close to Canadian Square. Action plan by the middle of August.
  •
Vaughan is currently developing a Beatification Plan for the City that will continue to enhance and beautify the streets of Kleinburg with flowering baskets and planters. This forthcoming plan will be presented to Council in the fall and will outline the long-term plans to beautify the City, including the Kleinburg community.

Delay/Cancellation of Municipal Projects

Disappointingly, three municipal projects that the city budgeted for Kleinburg in 2015 have all been delayed or cancelled.  The first project is the rehabilitation of the former United Church to become the Pierre Berton Discovery Centre.  This project now has a completion scheduled for 2018.  The second project is repairs on Kline House (revamping the porch, and replacing rotting siding).  This project has been deferred to 2017.  The final project is the redesign of the Islington Avenue streetscape.  The streetscape plan was originally developed in 2009 but never implemented.  On June 16, the proposal (RFP) call for design of a revamped streetscape was cancelled.  The RFP is supposed to be reissued.

What is happening in our area

  • A reminder again that there will be closures on Teston Road and Stegman’s Mill Road, from Ravendale Court to Pine Valley Drive, for a five (5) month period starting in July.

  • You can help stop the 413 (new mega-highway proposed to go just north of Kleinburg).  Visit stopthe413.ca to send a letter to say no to this senseless mega-highway.  Tell Ontario to invest in public transit, and protect water, forests and farmland.  Study after study shows that building a new highway doesn’t reduce traffic.  It encourages more people to drive, further clogging our roads.  Public transit is the most efficient way to move people.  Investing in GO transit improvements will get more people out of their cars, reduce traffic jams and protect farms and forests. Humber River Shakespeare Co. presents

A Midsummer Night's Dream - July 10 & 12 in Kleinburg

This summer, one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies hits the road and brings the magic of outdoor theatre to communities across Ontario.  A Midsummer’s Night Dream, the most popular comedy in Shakespeare’s canon, is a delightful tale of meddling fairies, starcrossed lovers, royal engagements, and muddled tradesmen caught up in chaos.

Humber River Shakespeare has been touring professional, outdoor Shakespeare to communities across the GTA for the last NINE years. Their productions are done as in Shakespeare’s day: in the open air, with simple sets, colourful costumes, a love of the language and a focus on playful storytelling. All performances are family friendly, and offered free of charge, but donations are most gratefully accepted. Suggested Donation $20.  For info - www.humbershakes.com/on-tour.

Kline House needs you!!!

The Kleinburg Old Boys are still looking for some new faces to assist with the supervision of the Kline House when it is open as an Historical Collection and Binder Twine Display on weekends.

Volunteering once or twice a year, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, would be appreciated.  It is a great way to learn about the history of Kleinburg.  If interested, contact Pam Schwenger at kleinburgkids@sympatico.ca or 647-222-6866.

Tree Planting - Kleinburg New Forest North

Thursday May 5, 2016

On Thursday, May 5, 2016, three classes of students from Kleinburg P.S. helped to keep our community green by assisting in the planting of 315 small trees and shrubs provided by the Toronto and Region Conservation for the Living City. The students planted in the Treelawn area, just north of the firehall. Some of the native varieties planted were choke cherry, serviceberries, two varieties of dogwood, ninebark, sumac, white pine and white spruce, sugar maple, aspen and black cherry. Kudos to the students of Kleinburg P.S. and the Kleinburg Old Boys Community Group for making this worthwhile event happen. The students were able to check out prior years of planting growth!
